Summary: | Papua, known as an area located at eastern of Indonesia with high earthquake-possibility. This is due to the presence of many tectonic plates located next to Papua. The most-two significant plates that affect Papua are Australian Plate and Pacific Plate. It is well-known that Australian plate moves north while the Pacific Plate moves to west. Interaction between these plates lead to the area deformation occur in Papua. In purpose to define and analize Papua deformation-characteristic caused by any tectonic activity, it is important to measure the displacement and velocity-displacement of the area. Known technology can be used to measure the millimeter-displacement from an area in Papua is GPS (Global Positioning System). Continuous-GPS observation has the ability to measure position and coordinate from time to time continuously and record the data. The output from the recorded data is carried out in order to analyze 2D-displacement or even 3D-displacement more easily. Then, time-series form from the observation coordinate can be arranged from these tophocentric data. The result can be used as a basis to define and calculate the deformation vector-velocity hence its accuration. In addition, also the result can be used to define, analyze, and categorize area within Papua into plate section, wether receives more significant effect from Pacific Plate, Australia Plate, or any other Plates next to Papua. Characteristic of deformation at south of Papua shows that the area moving north while the north area of Papua moving west. The characteristic of deformation in the area is determined by dominant plate’s movement next to each measurement point. |
