Sunscreen activity and the cream safety were determined in vivo using New Zealand albino rabbit as animal model. The pH, globul size, and organoleptic profile of all cream formulas contained 1, 2, and 5% of Kappaphycus alvarezii powder, either with 20% of olive oil or paraffin liquidum, 5 % combination of Tween 80-Span 80, and 3% of cetylalcohol were not changed during the evaluations, while the cream viscosity increased significantly. Cream contained 5% of Kappaphycus alvarezii powder gave the highest sun protection effect with a sun protection factor of 4.77, and have no irritant effect on the rabbit skin, however its showed slightly irritation effect on rabbit eyes with a conjungtiva score of 0.267 on the safesty test. <br /> text |
