Description
Summary:Lasem is a small city in Indonesia that lies in the border of Central Java and East Java. The city has strong Chinese tradition since it was one of the ports where Chinese merchant anchored in the Northern Coast. Through the Lasem River that lies on the west part of its settlement, the Chinese merchants expanded its trading and gained its economic strength. Nevertheless, at present, Lasem is known only as a transit city in Pantura route and since a number of the dwellers left, it became a dead city.

Lasem has unique culture potential where dwellings built by the new comers were courtyard with white high walls and gate as the main entrance with Chinese characteristic. The main building of the dwelling is an acculturation of the Chinese and Javanese culture, characterized by the presence of an altar as a place to pray to the ancestor and the layout of the building that is surrounded by open space. The form and function of the buildings in the unique courtyard dwelling are now changed into commercial with additional modern elements along with the economic development, especially the ones located along the Pantura route. They also turn into warehouse buildings in the Chinese dwelling area. It becomes a threat to the sustainability of the historical legacy in the city of Lasem.

This thesis is about the necessity of revitalization to be conducted as an effort to enhance the quality of historical Chinese dwelling. In the literature review, the efforts of preserving historical legacies in the international and national scales and the typology of the courtyard dwelling in the Chinese culture are being reviewed. Through this literature review and site analysis, design criteria of the improvement of Chinese dwelling area in Lasem, is being proposed. It is expected that the revitalization is able to increase the quality of the environment of the area where the courtyard dwelling is being preserved through adaptation to the new function and activities.
