Description
Summary:Barito Basin which located in the South Borneo Province, is a Tertiary sedimentary basin that has potentially resources, such as coal. Warukin Formation is one of coal carrier formation in the basin and is located in the research area. Coal contains a form of "new" alternative energy called coal bed methane.

Methane gas in coal is strongly associated with cleat production. Cleat is natural fracture forms in coal bed as a part of coalification. Hence, cleat analysis study is interesting to do, besides the geological mapping with scale 1:12.500 as main focus. It can be used to find out more about cleat attributes, and its relationship with coal quality and geological structure features.

The research area is located in Tutupan and Wara Area, which are also mining concession of PT. Adaro Indonesia. The area is extensively 56 km2 wide and located on UTM 331000-341350 mE and 9753750-9761550 mN. Landform in the research area is far more changed because of mining activity. Before, the southeastern and southwestern part of research area are homoclinal ridge form. In central part, it has relatively gently contour pattern.

Sedimentary deposition in Barito Basin at Late Miocene results rock units in the research area. The oldest unit of the research area is Sandstone-Claystone Unit which

deposited in upper delta plain environment. The Sandy Claystone Unit is conformably deposited above the oldest unit in lower delta plain environment. Sedimentation

continued until The Sandstone Unit and The Claystone Unit were deposited. Plio-Pleistocene deformation in the form of reverse fault lead the older units which are

Sandstone-Claystone Unit and Sandy Claystone Unit cropped out. Present mining activity causing Dump Unit in the research area and forming the recent landforms.

Cleat analysis was conducted in the research area using scan line method. Scan line method was used to measure cleat spacing, orientation, height/length, aperture, and

type of cleat. Orientation and intensity patterns, also distribution patterns of cleat spacing and aperture will be obtained from the data. These will be attributed to coal properties and geological structures in the research area.
