Summary: | Phytoplanktons are the base of the ocean food chain and a good indicator for the abundance of life in the water. Phytoplanktons are the microscopic marine life that uses chlorophyll-a for photosynthesis. The presence of phytoplankton in the Indonesian sea is influenced by various aspect, like seasons, wind patterns, differences in rainfall, forest fires, volcanic activity, or other phenomena. In Halmahera waters, there is an island volcano where its location is very close to the sea, Mount Gamalama. The purpose of this study is to assess the spatial and temporal seasonal variation of chlorophyll-a in Halmahera waters, and examines the effect of the Mount Gamalama volcanic eruption event to the condition of chlorophyll-a in the Halmahera waters. The method used in this research is chlorophyll-a value observation, at the sample points around the research area using Aqua MODIS satellite image, with the type of satellite imagery are L2 and L3, which were taken daily and monthly basis. <br />

In general the chlorophyll-a maximum values in the waters around Halmahera happened in eastern monsoon. The emergence of Halmahera Eddy in northeast of Halmahera and the upwelling phenomena in the Seram Sea and the Banda Sea is the most powerful factor affecting the variation of chlorophyll-a. The presence of El Niño and La Nina affect the variation of chlorophyll-a, especially in the north and east. The influence of the eruption of Mount Gamalama only for a moment, and its scope is not wide, and depending on the magnitude of the eruption events. |
