Description
Summary:Malay Architecture is an architectural style in the region that are generally dominated by the Malay community, such as a part of Malaysia, Sumatra, Java, Kalimantan and Sulawesi. In arranging the space, generally, Malay architecture reflects the elements

of cosmology, such as adjusting the orientation in relation to geographical aspects (river, sea, mountains, or the circulation of the sun). With the geographical condition which is largely a lowland, and the rivers as the main access, it can be presumed that the culture of living on the riverfront is very influential in the formation of the tradition of architecture in Kalimantan Barat. Historical records showed that most of

the Malay sultanate in Kalimantan Barat was established in the riverfront areas. The research aims is to found the spatial characteristics (exterior and interior) of

Malay Sultanate Palaces, located on the coastal, interior valley and interior upland areas on the province of Kalimantan Barat, and to compile its into classification. The substance of this research are the elements which forming the spatial characteristics

(exterior and interior space). Due to the vast research area, some of the palaces only remain ruins and cannot be observed physically, and also the limitation of research time, hence the elements which formed spatial characteristics such as atmosphere and nuance of space, comfort of space, and others, and as well as the factors which influencing in forming of spatial characteristics such as politic, social and culture will not be discussed in this study. In effort to identify and compile the phenomenon of the elements that forming the

spatial characteristics of the palaces, the research conducted by using the content

analysis method of data image. Identification's results showed some findings on the elements that forming the characteristics of exterior and interior space of the palaces, namely: location, orientation and placement, building's mass configuration, site's marker elements; configuration, shape, composition and zoning of interior space in the main building of the palaces. Based on those results analysis then continued by using comparative analysis. Findings indicates that: 1) the location of the palaces, either located on the coastal,

interior valley, or interior upland areas, always in the waterfront areas; 2) orientation and placement of the buildings based on the position of the river, either perpendicular to the river, parallel to the river, or follow the river upstream and downstream directions; 3) configuration of the palaces building mass in most of the tread formed a linear pattern, which arranged in layers either parallel or perpendicular to the river, with amount that varies from two to ten masses; 4) there are three elements that dominate as the site's marker, which are: royal flagpole which similar to the ship's

flagpole, cannons, and the great mosque, with position in front of the building or the site; 5) classification of palaces which based on the results of the comparison of configuration, shape, composition, and the placement of the interior space which based on zoning in the main building, showed that the location of the regions, either coastal, interior valley, or interior upland areas, does not affects to the similarities or differences.
