Present condition is still far from the ideals, accident numbers is still increasing. One of the accident causes are loss of vehicle control caused by slipping. Loss of vehicle control caused by slipping can be reduced by providing adequate microtexture and macrotexture. Microtexture and macrotexture are needed to provide good friction between road surface and vehicle tyre in lof to high speed especially in rainy condition. Styrene Butadiene Styrene application as modifier in Stone Mastic Asphalt mixture are expected to increase functional performance of the mixture.

Laboratory testing is done using Marshall method to determine the optimum asphalt content (OAC) for each mixture. This then followed by Polished Stone Value test on the aggregate which will be used in the mixture. Functional performance of the mixture are evaluated in OAC condition using British Pendulum Test (BPT) and Sand Patch.

OAC results obtained is 6,6% for the 60/70 pen asphalt with aggregate gradation D = 5mm; 5,6% for the 60/70 pen asphalt with aggregate gradation D = 22mm; 7% for the SBS 2,5% modified asphalt with aggregate gradation D = 5mm; and 5,3% for the SBS 2,5% modified asphalt with aggregate gradation D = 22mm.

BPT and sand patch test results show that mixture with aggregate gradation D=5mm give better British Pendulum Number (BPN) than mixture with aggregate gradation D=22mm. While SBS addition will decrease BPN of the mixture. Texture depth in mixture with aggregate gradation D=5 mm will be smaller than mixture with aggregate gradation D=22mm because of smaller aggregate particle gaps that formed. text
