In the National Defense Strategy, preparation of areas as the defense fields was held on the basis of strategic estimation of possible threats faced and projected in three layers of defense field- the defense field buffer, the main defense field, and field resistance.

This study identifies the capabilities of Western fleet command underwater warfare in supporting layers of defense field and the consideration of whether or not Submarine Force in Western fleet command is significant. Research method used in this research is qualitative research method, with a descriptive analysis technique. To obtain the data, the writer used interview, observation and literature study methods. The results of this study found that Western fleet command underwater warfare currently relies on two naval weaponry and under- water sabotage. The current Koarmabar Mine Warfare is uncapable of supporting the defense field buffer layer, while the ability to sabotage the water layer has not been able to support the main defense field. So submarine weaponry Koarmabar is required to support each layer of defense field. The weaponry serves as fire power to destroy the enemy forces, strategic reconnaissance, support mining operations and underwater sabotage. Underwater weaponry synergy in implementing the necessary sea battle is required to support the field layers of defense in the waters of western Indonesia region. text
