Summary:The need of energy in Indonesia is increasing, especially the electrical energy. Fossil fuel is the dominant non-renewable energy that being used. But the consequence of repeatedly use fossil fuel is the environment’s defect. One of the renewable-environmentally friendly potential energy in Indonesia is ocean current energy. This final project research studied the ocean current pattern in Riau Straight using Princeton Ocean Model (POM) 3D hydrodynamic model as the tool to simulate the ocean current data. Ocean current simulation of Riau Straight will be conducted for 30 days. The model inputs were bathymetry and 6 tidal components data in 8 open boundary points. During spring tide, the maximum value of power density was 1220 Watt/m2 which available in one hour. While at the neap tide, the maximum value of power density was 390 Watt/m2 which available in one hour. Telaga Punggur, Batam was the potential place to install the marine turbine.
