Chloroplast of Porphyridium cruentum contains photopigmen protein-complexes for photosynthesis that capable of harvesting of photon and potential for sensitizing solar cell. The present research aims to study whether chloroplast of P. cruentum can be used for sensitizing solar cell or not. The steps of the research included isolation and characterization of chloroplast for P. cruentum cells and construction of dye sensitized solar cells. The result showed that the wet biomass of P. cruentum was obtained from the cell culture cultivated in Walne medium for eight days. SDS-PAGE analysis showed that nine protein complexes with molecular weight of 160, 95, 68, 60, 39, 37, 32, 17 and 13 kDa of chloroplast isolated from P. cruentum biomass was identified as protein complexes in photosystem I and photosystem II. Chloroplast sensitized solar cell exhibited photovoltaic effect with efficiency of 1.03 × 10–4 %, indicating chloroplast could facilitate absorption of photon in solar cell. text
