This thesis studies of environmental quality improvement activities through the approach of forming the character as a sense of place. This thesis is the Old Town Commercial Center area of Denpasar which began to an experience physical degradation resulting in loss of function and character of the area. Character of the Old Town Commercial Center area of Denpasar, is formed by physical shape, atmosphere and activity that is thick with the various activities. But along with the development of urban areas began to switch to the modern area, the area of the Old Trade Center slowly becoming obsolete and lose its character as an historic area of town. The objective character of the area in the excavation of this study is an effort to forming the sense of place in the historic area of town. Sense of place can become a strong binding between the physical form with the society as a perpetrator of activity. Connections are expected to make the area as the area who have an emotional connection not only for the people around the region but also to communities outside the region. Sense of place can also be picked up image and the value of an area, because it gives distinctiveness or uniqueness between one place to another. <br /> <br /> <br /> This thesis provides the concept of the proposed settlement of the historic area of town with the approach of forming the character as a sense of place in the assumption of an ideal to set up the area. The study was formulated based on theories regarding the commercial corridor, sense of place and the study of the historic area of town. Discussion of this thesis is focused on extracting characters that include character building, character and activities of meaning and symbol characters. Discussion about the character of the area concluded that the selection of the formation, integration of functions and activities, and appropriate meaning in the region is a step in the establishment of the sense of place.
