Summary: | Precipitation data over South Sulawesi exhibit diferent in amount, spatial and temporal patterns between the Western dan Eastern part of that region, which divided by Bawakaraeng Mountains Range (BMR), particulary in December- January-February (DJF). The different of rain pattern in West and East BMR is presumed to be caused by the presence and the position of BMR in the boundary
lines between two area. To investigate that, Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) was used to simulate weather pattern over the region with some
experiments in topographic modification, for West Case and East Case respectively. Model simulations shows that the influence of BMR topography was only significant in West Case. BMR topography plays an important role in

inducing a strong synoptic flow from west by blocking humid air mass, which giving a rise to an accumulation of air mass in west side of BMR. The topography
also induce the orographic rainfall, which causing a high concentration of rain appeared just in the west of BMR. The BMR topography also play a role in
increasing the chance of cold pool emergences, which able to initiate a new convection in the west coast area, typically in the early morning. On contrary, in
the East Case, the role of BMR topography is not too significant. It just accelerate the sea breeze convergence on the top of the mountains in early noon, so it will reduce rainfall on the east coast area of South Sulawesi. The main mechanism in this case is caused by land-sea breeze, which give rise to the convergence of sea breeze from the sea around South Sulawesi, especially during afternoon. |
