THE EFFECT OF LOCAL AND NON LOCAL FORCES ON VARIABILITY OF UPWELLING INTENSITY IN BANDA SEA

Variation of upwelling intensity in Banda Sea has been studied using surface wind velocity from NCEP/NCAR (National Centers for Environmental Prediction/National Centers for Atmospheric Research), temperature and salinity data from the result of SODA (Simple Ocean Data Assimilation) simulation, and...

In addition, they also vary interannually (El Niño and La Niña). Upwelling intensity in the Banda Sea is affected by both local (Ekman pumping) and non local factors (remote forcing). In the months that represent Southeast monsoon, Ekman pumping has positive value (upwelling) and the intensity varies between 0.78x10-6 – 12.2x10-6 m/s, corresponding with shallower thermocline layer and lower SST (Sea Surface Temperature) (27.9 – 28.1°C) compared with other months. El Niño (La Niña) causes negative (positive) anomaly of thermocline layer depth, which shows that the thermocline layer become shallower (deeper) than normal condition. text
