Description
Summary:Mud volcano is a typical surface morphology formed by sedimentary extrusive of the subsurface overpressured formations or shale diapir. This dissertation is an integrated and comprehensive study mud volcano in East
Java Basin covering surface data analysis, laboratory analysis, subsurface data interpretation, subsidence history modeling, rate of sedimentation modeling, strain
analysis, overpressured mechanism analysis, and Hele Shaw analog modeling.
This research results in a new formulation of the elements and processes of a mud volcano generation system that has not been produced by the previous researchers on mud volcano. The mud volcano generation system is divided into three subsystems, namely Generatif Subsystem, Migration Subsystem, and Extrusion
Subsystem.
The implementation of the new formula of subsurface and surface characters of mud volcano result in the first model of mud volcano system in East Java. The mud volcano in East Java can be classified into four models, i.e. Kuwu, Crewek Medang, and Lusi models.
The appearance of a mud volcano in East Java is caused by an intensive contractional tectonic deformation which with the strain ratio more than 0.36 and is located at lower lithostatic pressure compared with its surrounding. Contractional tectonic affects the generation of mud volcanoes on the migration and extrusion subsystems level. Sedimentation rate controls the generation of mud volcanoes on the process of generative subsystem and as one of the factors contributing to the overpressured zone in the migration subsystem. The cause of overpressuring in East Java Basin is thought to be rapid sedimentation (over 280
m/my), deep burial (more than 1,000 m), and the dominance of shale (over 85%) which is mainly composed by smectite or kaolinite mineral.
Hele Shaw analog modeling simulates how a mud volcano system reaches its critical pressure phase and it then erupts. In this research, it is simulated the impact
of drilling pipe into a mud volcano system in various pressures phases. If the mud volcano system is in critical pressure phase, the drilling pipe will cause a direct and rapid explosion of the mud volcano. Meanwhile, if the mud volcano system is in near critical phase, the explosion will start to occur if the drilling pipe is deepened. If the mud volcano is in noncritical phase, there will be no explosion; it will only cause the decrease in mud volcano pressure.
The impact of artificial vibration is also simulated in this research. In simulation using Hele Shaw analog modeling shows that the single vibration will only cause
the decrease pressure in mud volcano system. The explosion will happen if the vibration occurs at several times. Other important finding from this research is that the overpressured mud zone has a potential to be an unconventional gas reservoir with high gas storage capacity. The gas storage capacity of the mud based on adsorption analysis at 65oC temperature ranges from 812 scf/ton up to 3,217 scf/ton. The unconventional gas
reservoirs of overpressured mud zone is proposed as a new hydrocarbon play type: mud gas play (MGP).
This study provides a new method in the development of mud volcano potential map The map comprises information about the position of subsurface overpressured zone which can potentially act as a mud volcano. The mud volcano potential map can be used for multiple purposes.
