Description
Summary:Introduction of surfactant as a mesopore structure directing agent (SDA) for ZSM–5 with organic compounds as a micropore SDA, tetrapropylammonium (TPA), has been successfully reported and produced hierarchical porous ZSM-5. The development of SDA free ZSM-5 due to problems arising from organic SDA, such as high production costs, waste water contamination, air pollution and coke arising from incomplete decomposition of organic compounds. Introduction of surfactant to the SDA free ZSM-5 system will generate hierarchical porous zeolite. Due to positive charge interaction of surfactant hydrophilic group with negative charge of the zeolite framework, supported by the Na+ ions which serve as SDA and charge balancing agent for the zeolite framework. In this study, the cationic quartenary surfactant, benzalkonium chloride (Sanizole-C), used as mesoporous SDA compound and added to the SDA free ZSM–5. Zeolite was synthesized using a hydrothermal method with the basic parameters of Si / Al = 22,9; H2O/Si = 18,34; Sanizole-C/Si = 0,059; NaOH / Si = 0,15; TPA / Si = 0,17. Synthesis performed two different pathways, normal and modified pathway. X-ray diffraction revealed that the crystalline obtained from the modified pathway, while normal pathway produced amorphous. SEM morphology showed differences between normal and modified pathway, modified pathway produced round and uniform morphological crystals and have intracrystalline macropores and macropores. Introduction of surfactant to the system of SDA free ZSM- 5 can generate hierarchical porous using a modified pathway.
