Description
Summary:United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) 1982 has stated that the coastal state has sovereign rights over the sea regions. This statement encourages coastal states to apply for ownership of sea region such as continental shelf extension. Indonesia as coastal state country has the right to apply continental shelf extension to the UN (United Nations) through the Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf (CLCS). Northern Papua seas in Indonesia have the potential of having continental shelf extension.

Goal of this study is to determine the continental shelf extension in the northern Papua seas. The method that used to determine the continental shelf extension is combination of the formula lines based on approach from scientific and technical guidelines issued by the CLCS.

Maximum continental shelf extension which determined in northern Papua seas has a size 39,946 km2 as the result of a combination of 60 nautical miles from foot of slope (FOS) formula line and 60 nautical miles from extra boundary between Indonesia and Papua Nugini at Eauripik rise.
