Based on

the data from the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Indonesia has 13,824 old wells

which have high effect on water coning. Water shut- off (WSO) is the process of closing the

pores of the rock with the help of particular polymer injection to minimize the effects of

water coning. Polymer which proposed in this study is polyvinyl alcohol which is reacted

with a crosslinking agent. Generally, crosslinking agent used in the process WSO is the

metal chromium (III). However, chromium is included into the kind of heavy metal that can

pollute environment. The crosslinking agent proposed in this study is from the class of

organic compounds, named glutaraldehyde. Formed polymer gel was then characterized

using infrared spectroscopy, and resulting peak area wavenumber 1,206.072 cm-1 and had a

viscosity of 31.79 cP. Value of porosity and permeability of the core is reduced from 22.9 to

11.52% and 255 be 85.98 mD. In addition, the gelation time of the polymer was depended on

several parameters such as polymer concentration, salinity, crosslinking agent concentration,

and temperature. Hopefully this WSO process can increase oil production in Indonesia

without environmental degradation effect added. text
