Summary: | Effects of the ionospherec can degrade accuracy of GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) data, which eventually can introduce position error up to a few-ten meters. In order to achieve accurate positioning using GNSS technique, effect of the ionosphere should be properly reduced. There are some widely acceptable methods to reduce such effects, one of which is to use an optimal ionospheric correction model. With regards to ionospheric imaging using GNSS, such model can be used to quantify characteristic of the ionosphere through parameter of VTEC (Vertical Total Electon Content).
This research will examine ionospheric activities that is focused on the study of temporal characteristic of VTEC and its correlation with the sunspot number. The GPS (Global Positioning System) data from the IGS (International GNSS Service) Geospatial Information Agency from January 2010 to December 2012 are used in this research.
Results from the data processing indicate that the ionosphere is affected by solar heating and demonstrate that the value of VTEC is very vortile. Minimum activity of the ionosphere is about early morning between 4:00 pm until 5:00 pm with a value of about less than 20 TECU and a maximum occurs at 14.00 pm until 15:00 pm with VTEC value more than 40 TECU. Correlation with the sunspot number showed a positive correlation with coefficient correlation of 0.77. Ionospheric activity (VTEC) increases from month to month over the year 2010 to 2012, in general, the peak ionospheric activity occured in 2012. Ionospheric scintillation possibly occurs during the measurements period. VTEC values during the months of equinox, summer solstice and winter solstice shows that the highest ionospheric activity occurs during the equinox period. Spectral of VTEC consists of the phenomenon of annual, semi annual, diurnal, and ter-diurnal. |
