Summary:Along with the technology development, demand for rare earth metals has increased. This research studied about the use of emulsion liquid membrane technique for the separation of rare earth metals ions , especially lanthanum ions (La3+) , samarium ions (Sm3+) and ytterbium ions (Yb3+) using di-2-ethylhexyl phosphoric acid (D2EHPA) as carrier compound, span 80 as surfactant and kerosene as organic solvent and nitric acid as stripping agent. Some optimum value of variables that affect the result of extraction percentage of rare earth metals ions have been studied, including : 5% of <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> span 80 concentration for La3+ and Yb3+, 4 % for Sm3+, the concentration of D2EHPA is 4 % , the volume ratio of membrane phase ( Vm ) with internal phase volume ( Vi ) is 1 : 1 , optimum pH of the external solution phase for La3+ and Yb3+ is 3 , for Sm3+ is 2 , external solution phase concentration for La3+, Sm3+, Yb3+ respectively ( 0 ,7199 ; 0,6651 ; 0,5779 ) mM , internal phase concentration is 2M , membrane phase volume ratio ( Vm ) with external phase volume ( Ve ) is 1 : 2 , stirring speed emulsion for La3+ and Yb3+ is 2000 rpm , for Sm3+ is 2500 rpm , stirring time emulsion for La3+ and Sm3+ is 10 minutes , for Yb3+ is 5 minutes , resting time for the emulsion before having contact to external phase is 10 minutes, the speed of the contact between the emulsion to external phase at 700 rpm , contact time between the emulsion to external phase is 5 minutes, duration for external phase emulsion to be separate after contact for La3+ and Yb3+ is 5 minutes , for Sm3+ is 10 minutes . The optimum conditions applied to the separation of rare earth metal ions as the results of extraction percentage ( % E ) were measured by UV- Vis spectrophotometer for La3+, Sm3+, Yb3+ respectively 96,44 %, 95,60 %, 97,81 % , (La3+, Sm3+, Yb3+ mixture) is 92,34 % , 93,09 % for monazite samples and using ICP – OES measurements for La.....
