HABITABLE ZONES AROUND STARS DETECTED HARBORING PLANETS

Habitable zone (HZ) is the region around a star in which life supporting planets can exist. Stellar mass (and hence stellar luminosity) determined the boundaries (inner edge and outer edge) of HZ. The most comprehensive work in this field, particularly in the HZ based on liquid water, is the paper...

Stellar mass (and hence stellar luminosity) determined the boundaries (inner edge and outer edge) of HZ. The most comprehensive work in this field, particularly in the HZ based on liquid water, is the paper by Kasting et al. (1993).

Buccino et al. (2006) use the properties of ultraviolet radiation to define the boundaries of HZ. In this paper both of HZ criterion is reviewed. The planetary system generator StarGen (Burrow 2006,Yamani 2006) is applied to simulate planetary system formation. StarGen define the inner edge of HZ as inner edge =0.93xL and the outer edge as outer edge = 1.1xL , where L represents the luminosity of the star. As an attempt to understand general features of planetary systems, the mass of the star is varied. Afterward, five stars that have been detected harboring planets are simulated using the information of their masses, luminosities, and spectral types. The five stars are Gl 581, 55 Cnc, 47 UMa, HD 128311, and Ups And. Solar Sytem-like is also simulated in order to know how common our Solar System configuration is. The probability of finding terrestrial planets within HZ of each system is estimated using both StarGen and Kasting et al. (1993) criterion. text
