CHARACTERISTIC OF PEDESTRIAN CROSSING AT MID-BLOCK CASE STUDY: JL. MERDEKA, BANDUNG

On a short road block, major crossing activities will be conducted at the intersection because it's considered more secured by the pedestrians. But, on a long road block major crossing activities will be conducted at mid-block not at the intersection. Jl. Merdeka was chosen as the study area wh...

But, on a long road block major crossing activities will be conducted at mid-block not at the intersection. Jl. Merdeka was chosen as the study area where crossing frequency found in high number. To observe and collect all the parameters needed, a field survey using camera was carried out in Jl. Merdeka. In this survey, pedestrian crossing activities was recorded three times in a day in order to compare the differences shown as vehicle traffic change as well. In addition, questionnaires were distributed and collected from 200 responden who are pedestrians in this street. A single crosser behavior and group crosser behavior are analyzed separately.

The main considered parameter in this research is the minimum acceptable gap for pedestrian to cross. It was found that the minimum gap will be larger when pedestrian was approached by light vehicle. In addition, group crosser generally need larger gap than single crosser need. Moreover, it was found that crossing

speed also affects the minimum acceptable gap for a crosser. Generally, the higher the crossing speed, pedestrian’s minimum gap will be smaller. Another

observation carried out on pedestrian’s crossing track/path in this street.

Pedestrians tend to cross with a non-straight path especially on lane 1 and 4 because generally pedestrians will take the shortest track to reach their destination on the other side of the road. It was also found that most of the amount of time allocated by pedestrian to cross will be at the outer lane (lane 1&4). It's because vehicle move slower on this lanes and the slower vehicle move the more it gives time for pedestrian to dwell longer on that lanes. text
