Summary: | The use of natural minerals as raw material for the manufacture of synthetic zeolite is

still not widely practiced. Along with the development of technology, synthetic

zeolites have been found more than 200 types of zeolite framework. Zeolite Y is a

synthetic zeolite which has a biggest use in the petrochemical industry, especially as

a catalyst in Fluid Catalytic Cracking (FCC). Perlite and fly-ash has been

successfully applied to create zeolite-Y at low temperatures, but still in a mixture

with Zeolite-A. This research will try to implement a similar composition of perlite

and fly-ash with kaolin as a source of silica and alumina natural materials to

synthesize zeolite-Y at low temperatures. Kaolin is used in this research due to its

application as a source of silica and alumina has produced zeolite-Y with a fairly

high purity, but still using the hydrothermal method. Kaolin is first activated by

adding NaOH and calcined at a temperature of 650 C, producing metakaolin.

Metakaolin with ludox, and water is used as raw material for the synthesis of zeolite-

results observed in this study. Two compositions of each metakaolin mixed with

NaOH at three different compositions , and then heated at 90 oC for three and five

days. The products formed is characterized by the X - Ray Diffraction (XRD). XRD

results that have been done shows that the composition of the mixture with Si / Al

similar to perlite, 8,89 SiO2 : Al2O3 : 31,51 Na2O : 549,23 H2O have typical peak
pattern of zeolite-Y. |
