Summary:An important step in planning the manufacture of a component by CNC (Computer Numerical Control) machining is the selection of cutting tools. The size of cutting tools significanly affect the machining time. Therefore, in order to perform machining process efficiently, we need to select a set of cutting tools with optimal size. The tool selection dilemma lies in determining the best cutting tool or combination of cutting tools, which optimise the trade-off between material removal volume (MRV) and material removal rate (MRR). This research develops an algorithm for determining and selecting a combination of cutting tools for pocket machining. The algorithm will give a combination of cutting tools whose optimal machining time. This combination assigned in descend order, the first machining use the largest tool size then unmachine area left cut by smaller tools size. Based on this result, the tool-path for the largest tool size generated and so for smaller tools size. The results presented here suggest that the correct combination of cutting tools could reduce machining times by significant amounts.
