Description
Summary:The North East Java Basin is one of hydrocarbon producing basins in Indonesia. There are several obstacles in hydrocarbon exploration in this basin, one of them is overpressure. This study discusses occurrence, generating mechanism, and distribution of overpressure in Kedungtuban Region. Final well report, wireline log, and geochemical data are used in this study and then they are combined with geological condition in the study area. The methods used to analyze overpressure are wireline log pattern, Dutta‟s cross plot, and source rock maturity analysis. Eaton‟s method is used to estimate pore pressure.

Overpressure occurs in the lithology which is dominated by shale, ie in Tuban Formation. In wells penetrating Lidah and Mundu formations, overpressure is found in shallower formations, which are sand dominated Wonocolo Formation (Jambaran Well) and shale dominated Ledok Formation (Randublatung Well). There are two generating mechanisms of overpressure in the study area, i.e loading and non loading (clay diagenesis and hydrocarbon generation). Overpressure in shallow depth is caused by loading mechanism, while overpressure in deeper part is formed by non-loading mechanism.
