Summary: | Porous metal-organic frameworks of Zr clusters connected by organic linkers 1,4-benzenedicarboxylic (UiO-66) and biphenyl-4,4-dicarboxylic (UiO-67) were synthesized using a solvothermal method, and used as efficient heterogenous catalysts for acetalization of aldehydes and alcohols. The catalysts were characterized by X-ray Powder Diffraction (PXRD), Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) surface area measurements, Fourier-transform Infrared (FT-IR) analysis, and Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA). The Zr-based MOF were tested as catalysts under room temperature and without water removal. UiO-66 showed better catalytic activity than UiO-67, i.e. 91% and 86% of benzaldehyde conversion in methanol medium, respectively. UiO-66 was further explored as the catalyst of the reactions. Effect of catalyst concentration, other alcohols, other benzaldehydes, and catalyst recyclability were demonstrated. The results of the reactions were characterized by Gas Chromatography (GC) and 1H NMR. The performance of other catalysts such as zinc chloride, cobalt cloride and other MOF were also studied to compare the activities. |
