Summary: | This study is to assess the monthly surface salinity variations in the Aru Sea and Arafura Sea using Aquarius Satellite image data Aquarius during 2012. Distribution map of salinity data with 1o × 1o grid resolution are using Ocean Data View (ODV) program. The salinity variations then linked with monthly rainfall data from the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) precipitation and BMKG meteorological station in Timika during 2012. <br />

Validation of satellite image data with field data showed an error of 2,68%, from the small error indicates that the satellite image data are very good to assess monthly salinity variations in the Aru Sea and Arafura Sea. In the Aru Sea salinity in the area affected by the type of equatorial rainfall with two peaks in one year with a range between 31-34 psu . Low salinity there at the time of the first peak in April 2012 to May 2012 and at the time of the second peak in the month of September 2012. As for salinity in the Arafura Sea is influenced by the type of monsoon rainfall peak that occur only once a year. Low salinity occurs during January to May, with a range between 32,5 to 34 psu, while high salinity occurs during June and July with a range between 33 to 34,5 psu. The results of the correlation between rainfall salinity levels showed a very good correlation. In the Aru Sea correlation of -0,57, while the Arafura Sea correlation value of -0,63. |
