Summary: | The fast developments of the biodiesel industry will cause an increase of accumulated glycerol as the side product. Glycerol waste can cause environmental problems so a treatment that will convert glycerol to another useful product will be necessary. One of the methods of treating gycerol is by converting it to ethanol.

The purpose of this research is to convert glycerol to ethanol microbiologically by using Bacillus macerans. The fermentation process that converts glycerol to ethanol has been done in batch mode. The varied parameters are initial glycerol concentration which are 2%, 5%, 10% and 15%, fermentation temperature which are 26 degrees C, 30 degrees C, 35 degrees C and 40oC and medium's pH which are 5.5, 6, 6.4 and 7. The measurements of ethanol was done by using GC-14B from Shimadzu, pH by using the universal indicator and the cell's absorbance by using Genesis 10UV from Spetronic Unicam.

The research was carried out in 4 anaerobic fermentors and pure glycerol as substrate. The glycerol to ethanol fermentation’s optimum condition obtained from this research is at 15% initial glycerol concentration, medium’s pH 6 and 26 degrees C. The ethanol concentration obtained at the optimum condition is 0.025 g/L. |
