Summary:The study of this research is to discover the form and process of the transformation of waditra angklung exists in West Java. By conducting a comparative study toward a number of kinds of waditra angklung in accordance with the specific period of the cultural changes happened in Sundanese community, forms of process and the shift of concept of the symbolic or cosmological meaning, social use function among the Sundanese, way of playing, the making process, physical design and the performance of waditra angklung will be obtained. The object of this research was studied using the etnographical approach toward three different places of the research object. They covered waditra angklung buhun that exists among the Sundanese living in Cipta Gelar village (Kasepuhan Banten Kidul) Sukabumi; Waditra angklung badeng in Sanding village, Malangbong Garut; and modern angklung developed in the city of Bandung.<p>The comparative study conducted on these three waditra angklung are the result of the process of early changes of waditra angklung buhun which in its development was born to the idea of Sundanese farmers living in pre-Islamic period with its system of belief called Sunda Wiwitan and Hindu. The later development was the result of the influence of Islamic culture carrying the permanent cultivation system (rice field), and the last development was influenced by western idea and system of music education (Dutch) entering the life of ancient Sundanese through the political way and power. Of the entire shifting process experienced by waditra angklung, some modifications of the physical design, performance and funcitional changes from the transcendence-ritual function for spiritual-religious purpose to the function in gaining the secular-worldly excitement, education and the commercialization of the traditional culture were produce. <br />
