Description
Summary:Indonesia is a maritime country. Therefore all activities of life that occurs in Indonesia have a tight relation with the ocean. Wave is one of the ocean component that can be generated by wind and have major impact on activities of life that occurs at the ocean such as transportation and search of food sources. Therefore wave height prediction needs to be done so that all the activities of life at the ocean can be well prepared. Wavewatch III (WW3) model is an ocean wave model which have purpose to estimate the height of waves that generated by wind, therefore WW3 model is an ocean model that sensitive of the wind data input. Utilization of WW3 model for Sunda Strait waveheight prediction using low resolution (0.5o×0.5o) wind data from Global Forecast System (GFS) has been done by Isniarny (2012.) uses of GFS wind data as an input makes predicted waveheight for Sunda Strait from model WW3 has systematic error that relatively high (1,2m) when verified with multimision altimeter satellite.

ITB Meteorological Analysis Laboratory has been doing Indonesian-scale experimental high resolution weather forecast for the next two days using Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model (WCPL Experiment). This research intended to see whether the use of high resolution wind data from WCPL Experiment can improve performance WW3 models for forecasting ocean waves in Indonesia. The use of WCPL Experiment wind data is proven to increase performance WW3 models for forecasting ocean waves in Indonesia when verified with multimision altimeter satellite by generating predictions that valid for the next two days that had a correlation of 0.84 and a relatively low systematic error (0.5 m ).
