Description
Summary:Laboratory activities is needed for students to learn chemical reactions. To conduct chemistry experiment, standard laboratory equipments are used, and this requires lots of chemical. Consequently, lots of chemical wastes produced from this activities and this waste caused environment problems. Moreover, not many high schools able to provide adequate chemistry laboratory. To solve this problem a small scale experiment kit is needed for helping students to understand chemistry topics. Three kits have been prepared in this research: the first kit is used to learn acid-base reaction, the second kit is focused on the oxidation and reduction reactions and the last kit is used to test the student abilities in understanding chemical reactions. Three kits have been prepared using chemicals solution with a concentration range from 0.25 to 0.3 M. Each the solution is stored in a minidrop with maximal volume of 1 mL. The first kit consists of six aqueous colorless solution. A list of compounds may consist of HCl, H2SO4, Na2CO3, BaCl2, NaOH and another containing Na2CO3 as a duplicate sample. The kit is equipped with a transparent plastic and black carton as plastic pad used to react the solutions and replace reaction tube. In addition, there are pieces of litmus papers for testing acid-base properties. After students performed laboratory activities using first kit and a worksheet, there are 53 % of the 30 groups of students able to find all of the compounds completely and only 10 % were failed. The second kit consists of five aqueous solutions: CuSO4, FeSO4, FeCl3, BaCl2, and NaOH. The trial of kit set 2 is applied to students who are trying kit set 1. It turns out, of the 43 group (the number of each members are 2 people per group) all can be answered perfectly. The students also received a worksheet as a guide to performed the activities. About one hour, the students should finished the experiments and fill the Table in the worksheet with the formula of unknown samples. The method to react each samples has been drawn in a piece of laminated paper, so the students are easily to follow the instruction by adding one drop of each solution on the laminated paper. The third kit made for the purpose of the test kit. The results of the test kit set 3 to all the group (the members of each 2 people per group), the results obtained 91 % group of students able to find all compounds completely. The results of a questionnaire distributed to all the students showed that the use of small-scale chemistry kit can be used as a learning method that is more efficient for learning chemical reactions.
