Description
Summary:The purpose of this work is to understand the basics heat transfer that occur in latent thermal energy storage constituting of an array of cylindrical tubes. The study has been performed experimentally and numerically during the melting process at constant wall temperature.

The experiment was carried out in a horizontal shell-and-tubes type heat-exchanger. The phase change material (PCM) fills the shell-side of heat exchanger. In this study, the Pertaminas paraffin wax was used as the PCM. From the differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) measurements, the Pertaminas paraffin wax shows a solid-solid transformation before reaching the melting point (solid to liquid transformation).

In order to get a meaningful understanding of the effects of tube arrangements on the melting process, the experimental and the numerical studies were carried out on cylindrical tubes arranged both in in-line and staggered layouts. Each of the layouts consists of three different separations of heating tubes.
