With dissolution of united marketing system through Apkindo, as agreed between IMF and Indonesia\'s government in 1998, each plywood industry in Indonesia including PT. PSUT requires to reevaluate the firm operation system in order to minimize the production cost and to maintain the product quality as required in the International Standard, through Internal Evaluation (Strength and Weakness), External Evaluation (Opportunity and Threat) to set up company\'s competitive strategy and the application of \"Value Chain Management\" with the objective of increasing the added value/profit through : <br /> * Linkage with suppliers <br /> * Linkage with customers <br /> * Process linkages within the value chain of business units <br /> * Linkages across business unit value chain within the firm <br /> Follow by cost driver analysis and reconfiguration the value chain as and when required, in order to obtain the optimal solution for the firm operation system, which will increase the overall value added for the company. From the result of system evaluation, the recommended competitive strategy will be low cost strategy for the ordinary plywood, and differentiation strategy for LVL and other special products, and will be described into the firm operation system, as follows : <br /> The Overall Strategy, such as improving the strategic alliance with the forestry and plantation company, improving the value chain, linkage with supplier, inter operation / business unit, and customer, and the improvement of the quality and motivation of the workers. <br /> Differentiation Strategy, such as improving the promotion of new product, the qualification and motivation of R & D team, investing in new technology/process and improving the coordination between production and R & D team with Japanese, and Korean Customer. <br /> Low Cost Strategy, such as high cost & quality control through VATPS and the 5 quality-principles, improving the coordination between R & D, grader log, PPC and marketing team, the research project in drying process, reduce WIP, maximize the utilisation of the Co-generation plant and production capacity, penetration into new market and produce odd size product according to customer\'s requirements. <br /> Through the application of the operational strategies described above. it is expected to increase the overall firm value added, and create / generate the sustainable competitive advantages, so that PT PSUT, as one of the Indonesian Plywood Mill is ready to compete with the regional plywood producers in the Year 2003. text
