Liquid from the shells of the Anacardium occidentale,Linn contains several compounds,one of them is anacardic acid,which can be easily isolated. In anacardic acid,the alkenyl side chains exist primarily with 8\'(Z), L1\'(Z) and 14\'(Z) position double bonds in the (15:1), (15:2) and (15:3) constituents. Bromination of the isolated anacardic acid both in carbon to trachloride and chloroform gave white crystals with melting point 137° - 1400 C. High performance liquid chromatographic analysis on ODS-C18 by isocratic elution with methanol-aqueous acetic acid showed three peaks with different retention times compared to those of the parent compounds. The uv spectroscopic data showed T males = 228 nm, 300 nm and 328 nm. IR spectrum showed QC-Br - 684 cm 1 , while C=C = 1635 cm 1 from nonconjugated alkene did not appear. From the above data very probable that the product of bromination was dibromo, tetrabromo and hexabromo of saturated anacardic acid. Methylation on product of bromination with diazomethane in ether gave white crystals with melting point 84°-86°C. High performance liquid chromatographic analysis on the same column and eluent showed one peak only with different retention time compared to those of the product of bromination. High performance liquid chromatographic analysis on the different column and eluent should be further investigated. text
