Summary: | Research and application of sea water desalination has now become an urgent need as well as an interesting approach of solution in fulfilling people’s raw water daily usage. In terms of membrane technology for desalination, ceramic type is favorably used instead of polymer in reverse osmosis (RO) due to its durability and filtration capabilities. One of those is silica with high selectivity of saline. However, this materials have low hydro-stability property. To improve it, carbon shall be involved in its synthesis process to modify its structure. In this research, colloid of silica will be synthesized via sol-gel method from sodium silicate and addition of chitosan during gelation step. The colloid was then coated on a support produced from silica powder using geopolymerization technique and subsequently calcined to obtain ceramic membrane. Its desalination performance was tested by flowing pressurized artificial saline water (1% NaCl solution) through the membrane. The highest saline rejection is resulted from silica membrane with 2% addition of chitosan (mol w/w of chitosan/silica) in 600˚C of calcination process, which gave 69,68% and 67,87% in operating pressure of 3 and 5 bar, respectively. This support shall be an alternative option for desalination using ceramic membrane. |
