SUNSHINE DURATION AND ITS RELATION TO THE PARAMETERS OF CLIMATOLOGY USING CONTINUOUS WAVELET TRANSFORM (CWT) CASE STUDY: PONTIANAK, WEST KALIMANTAN (1981-2016)

Sunshine Duration (SD) has an important role in climate change or the weather on earth. Currently, climate change can be indicated by changing in SD values (dimming or brightening) in recent decades. SD analysis in Indonesia needs to be done to find out how big the impact of climate change. In this...

Currently, climate change can be indicated by changing in SD values (dimming or brightening) in recent decades. SD analysis in Indonesia needs to be done to find out how big the impact of climate change. In this study we analyzed daily data set of Tmean, Tmax, Tmin, diurnal temperature range (DTR), rainfall (RF), and SD in Pontianak, West Kalimantan in 1981-2016 are analyzed. Time series data set were analyzed using correlation analysis, FFT, linear trend, CWT and WTC. The results of this study show that the highest negative correlation is found between SD and DTR while the lowest negative correlation is found between SD and Tmin. SD and Tmean, and SD and Tmax have positive correlation. SD and RF, RF and all temperature variables have negative correlation. The linear trend analysis shows that the rise of Tmin (1.64 oC) occurs three times larger when compared with the increase of Tmax (0.49 oC) thus causing the DTR decrease. The increase in global air temperature over the past century is largely caused by increasing in the greenhouse gas concentration. The dominant period obtained through analysis on the Fourier domain are 12 months for Tmean, Tmax, DTR, and SD while 6 months for RF and Tmin. Results of CWT using the Morlet wavelet with dominant period 8-16 months for Tmean and Tmax. DTR have dominant period 8-16 months and 32-64 months while Tmin has period 12-20 months and 32-64 months. The high temperatures detected during this period are associated with peatland forest fires in Kalimantan. Drought and wetness is detected in the period of 4-8 months and 8-16 months in RF. This drought associated with the El Nino event resulted in a large amount of RF deviation to normal. Furthermore, the dominant period of 4-8 bulan and 8-16 months for SD. The brightening period of 1981-2016 is caused by changes in the characteristics of clouds and aerosols, causing an increase in the amount of solar energy reaching the earth's surface.

text
