SEISMOTECTONICS ANALYSIS HEAD OF BIRD PAPUA REGION BASED ON EARTHQUAKES AROUND 4 JANUARY 2009

On January, 4, 2009 was occurred a great earthquake (Mw 7.7) which followed by several aftershocks at north coast of Bird's Head of Papua. In this research, an analysis of stress axis is conducted to determine tectonic pattern. The method used is stress tensor inversion (Michael, 1987) which is...

In this research, an analysis of stress axis is conducted to determine tectonic pattern. The method used is stress tensor inversion (Michael, 1987) which is applied to premain shocks and aftershocks. The results are two principal stresses S1 (maximum compressive) which are oriented to the northeast – southwest. Analysis of principal stresses indicate that regional tectonics on the northern coast of Papua Bird's Head is dominated by the trust faulting. This faulting is influenced by movement of Caroline and Australian plates, where the Caroline plate subduct under Australian plate toward southwest with speed of 11 cm per year. In other hand, the Australian plate moves northeast with a speed of 10 cm per year. This tectonic pattern causes a rotation of the Bird's Head Papua with anti-clockwise direction. text
