Summary: | Sirih duduk or Piper sarmentosum Roxb. ex Hunter have been long used the people for traditional medicine to cure various diseases. One of them was used to cure bacteria and fungus infections. Investigation the antimicrobial activity of Piper sarmentosum roots has not been carried out. This research was aimed to isolate and identify antimicrobial compounds from Piper sarmentosum roots. The results showed methanol extracts of Piper sarmentosum roots have antimicrobial activity on B. subtilis, E. coli, P. aeruginosa and C. albicans. The separation bioactive compounds from methanol extracts of Piper sarmentosum roots was performed by coloumn chromatography, thin layer chromatography and recrystalisation. Identification of the bioactive compounds was carried out using ultra violet spectrometry, infra red spectrometry, mass spectrometry and nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometry. The results indicated that from methanol extracts, an alkaloid compound 5-hidroxy-5-(3,4- methylenedioxyphenyl)-2-pentenoyl pyrol, could be purely isolated. Examination of antimicrobial activity of this compound on B. subtilis, E. coil, P. aeruginosa and C. albicans with concentration 0.10-2.50 mg/mL indicated that increased the concentration equivalent with antimicrobial activity levels. The most effected and sensitif microorganism is E. coli. |
