Summary: | Ammonia is a fertilizer factory waste that can cause negative impact to the environment. Currently, the waste is treated with chemical methods, by way calcium addition to neutralise the waste . There is an alternative treatment for ammonia, in example by using Algae. This photosynthetic organism can utilize ammonia directly as its nitrogen source. As a photosynthetic organisms, their metabolic activity is affected light intensity. Based on this, a study of the effect of the sunlight intensity on the growth of C. pyrenoidosa and the ability of these microalgae to consume ammonia was conducted. The results of this study show that up to the light intensity of 14 x 104 Watt/m2, the growth of C. pyrenoidosa was affected by the light intensity and the relationship is linearly correlated. Furthermore, it was found that ammonia consumption was positively correlated with biomass growth rate and the value of yield coefficient of biomass from the consumed ammonia was 0.001 g.biomass/mmol. |
