The traditional market as a public space has an economic function and as a place for

humans to do the social activities. The development of modern transaction as an

innovation be the interesting way, the existence of traditional markets is feared cannot be

competed. The traditional market as a public space where there is a communication

process and cultural exchange in it by activities for all elements in traditional market.

The development of the modern market itself has its own interest to people which makes

the traditional market not competitive to it. In the process of revitalization by Bandung

Government to revitalize the traditional market image, needs to consider the excellence

aspects that contains the soul of traditional markets. Through the observation process,

there is a distinction perception between the government and the sellers. Then in the

process of revitalization through infrastructure renovation by the government, they will

still be able to aware about the important values of traditional market which should not

be lost from a traditional market. And also they really think that they will lost their

costumers. This study aims to identify the excellence values that exist in traditional

markets, that in the process of revitalization program through infrastructure development,

the excellence should not be lost.

The cultural values can be identified through the identification of interaction process that

affected by the settings in the traditional market environment, in a way taking Pasar Astana Anyar which is managed by the government and Pasar Sumber Hurip which is

managed by the private. Human as the main factor of traditional market activities and

interaction values has the pattern of economic interaction as the main activity in

traditional markets. Then the description and analysis results that exist in each

traditional market as a public facility can be found the diversities themselves and the

culture identity of traditional market and its influence nowadays. The placement of

traditional market or called settings, type, and kiosk factor affecting the communication

pattern in traditional market are the factors that can be the findings of this research.

Other phenomena such as consuments who put the groceries at some places or kiosks and

the artifacts in traditional market are shown things which can not be forgotten and

replaced some how are characterized some cultures, in this case study is West Java

Culture. Sundanese Culture as its application in everyday life especially in

communication is the usage of Sundanese language in a very dominant way by all people

in traditional market to do all of their activities. Modern market, in contrast does not use

the regional elements such as traditional market and uses its own standardization system

and not a local system. This becomes a significant aspect over the existence of traditional

markets are linked each other with the local activities such as craftsmen who uses natural

materials around them like bamboo and the traditional market seller is one of their

consumers to use their handicraft products as a display in their kiosk for the transaction

activities in traditional markets.

By the methods of field observation and interviewing all elements of the market and by

the concept of traditional market revitalization, it can be found of each other relation,

then through the processes of analysis finding and can be drawn conclusions and a

reference for the next research process either in the traditional market, or a good

implementation to some events or to build something which have related to the excellence

values that we can see in traditional markets. The existence of traditional market has a

meaningful value that it cannot disappear as well from people's lives. Not only just as a

commercial space, but also it contains some kinds of another meaning through communication and interaction themselves. The diversities of local cultural by its

richness strongly applied in traditional markets, the value of simplicity is different from

the modern market which also eliminates the interaction process of direct selling between

people as the main act of transaction process. The excellence point on local wisdom is

another important value that the traditional market has, it makes people still have an

interest to visit a traditional market. Layout or settings also has a big influence to make

traditional still exist. Finally, another excellence value of traditional market is the use of

weaving bamboo handicrafts such as ‘tampah’ by local people around and it used as a

display by vegetable seller and as distribution facilities in traditional market, which

means those things are directly related to the handicraft makers or local craftsmen in

West Java, so they are mutually reinforcing.

Then the results of this research can be a recommendation to the Bandung Government

as a stakeholder and the academics by looking at the excellence values through the point

of view of design and local culture. The synergy between all elements in the traditional

market and the government will be the unity and a way to keep the traditional markets

exist with excellence values that directly affect to the social culture that exists in the daily

life of society in Bandung. The results of this study will also make some recommendations

to the Government through PD. Pasar Bermartabat as the stakeholder of Bandung

policies by the point of view of cultural excellences, as well as they need to be aware

about the important values in traditional market are related to the settings which should

not be lost after the process of infrastructure renovation, through identifying the

excellences of cultural values in traditional market nowadays and the causes of

traditional markets is still maintained until this day. |
