Based on data from 2010, the number of vehicles that operated in Makassar reached 843 473 units, this figure is growing at about 14 percent per year. The unbalance between the recent number of vehicles and the existing transport infrastructure development, worsen the condition of traffic in Makassar. One of the potential that can be used to solve the congestion problem that occurred in the city of Makassar is by utilizing channels as urban transport medium, for trips for daily needs (formal), and trips for tourist activities (informal). Makassar City has three channels with an overall length of 15.11 km reach, which 2 among them - Jongaya 7.83 km and Panampu 4.92 km – can be used as water transport medium. Since 1990, both channels already served as urban drainage system as well as the main base for flood control. Channel transport becomes one solution to reduce the congestion problems that occurred in the city of Makassar. The purposes of this study are: to determine how much potential demand of transport modes based on waterways in Panampu and Jongaya Channels, factors that affect the user eagerness or reluctance to use channels as an alternative transportation medium, to identify the preferences of the user associated with the planning of channel as a transport medium, and to identify the extent to which the role of the Panampu and Jongaya Channel can be alternative transport mediums (either as a competitor or a complement to the road-based transportation in the city of Makassar). This study uses a quantitative descriptive methods approach to achieve these objectives, and further, uses crosstab analysis method, multinomial logistic regression and stated preference methods approach. Based on the study findings obtained, it can be said that the prospective users' viewpoints to the plan of operating channel-based transport/waterways is considered good and positive. Although the prospective users do not yet have a detailed picture of how channel-based transport services/waterways will be operated. Nevertheless, most of the prospective user states likely to be willing to use channelbased transport services/waterways in the future. From the survey and analysis results, obtained demand potential for channel-based transportation services/waterways, which contained approximately 20% of respondents who expressed their assurance to use this channel-based transport services, about 45% are likely to use this transport service, while approximately 35% of the remaining states they are not willing to use these transport services. Specifically, there are four variables that influence the willingness of prospective users using the waterways, namely: income, travel time, the reason for selecting the modes, and tolerance rates. text
