The phylogenetic tree was constructed based on cytochrome b gene to compare with 2 species of skinks (Sphenomorphus jobiensis and Mabuya stangeri), 1 species of gecko (Hemidactylus brookii) and 3 species of crocodiles (Caiman crocodylus, Alligator mississipiensis and Crocodylus porosus). The results show that among Varanus species even those belonging to different subgenus have essentially very similar sequence. As consequence, all Varanus species are closely related to each other or the cytochrome b gene in Varanus evolved essentially slowly. Some taxons of subgenus Empagusia, Odatria and Soterosaurus have relatively low similarities to Euprepiosaurus. Interspecific relationship among Euprepiosaurus species are essentially very closely related to each other. This result means that morphological characteristic as, well as cytochrome b data. Moreover, Varanus salvator togianus still needed to be analysed whether it still should be included into Varanus salvator, because the phylogenetic tree showed a tendency to diverge far from Varanus salvator salvator and Varanus salvator bivittatus. Nevertheless, some of the taxons had strong phylogenetic relationships among the members. In other words, this study still needed more analysis of the molecular characters to improve with the morphological characters. text
