Description
Summary:Human nature always wants to improve the quality of life especially in the health sector. This needs trigger to development of Drug Delivery System (DDS), starting from the use of raw herbs, the emergence of tablets, until the birth of encapsulation technology. Silica is known to have the ability to be used as an encapsulation material for improving the effectiveness of the use of the active substance. Sodium silicate is used as precursor and using Stober method to get silicate dispersed evenly. Chlorhexidine gluconate 2% is used as an active ingredient to kill germs. The purpose of this study is the obtainment of microcapsules of silica-chitosan-alginate containing chlorhexidine 2% with sizes below 1 μm. This is because the main target of the active substance is a channel size of 1 μm lateral contained in the root canals.

In this study did not use hyaluronic acid (HA) as clustering material. Chitosan and alginate is used as a clustering material in DDS, in addition to a combination of chitosan and alginate deliver the same active group HA is owned amine, carboxyl, and hydroxyl. The variation ratio of chitosan and alginate used is 2%: 2%, 6%: 2%, and 6%: 1% of the volume. Mixing results in a vacuum and then soaked with chlorhexidine gluconate 2%.

The sequence of addition and composition of chitosan and alginate are very influential on the formation of clusters, cluster formation is seen the best from sample 3 at 2% chitosan compositions as much as 6% in volume and 0.5 M alginate as much as 2% by volume, with an average cluster size of 0.7 μm. From FTIR we can see there are frequencies that have been formed silica, alginate, chitosan, and three connections between them and detected the C = C bond that is characteristic of the aromatic ring in chlorhexidine 2%. The results of the UV-VIS stated duration of drug release to 55 minutes with the release rate of 0.028 ppm per minute.
