Intermedia art originated as a term used to identify experimental art practices that incorporate the combination of two or more media. The use of the term intermedia art itself is often associated with artists as well as Fluxus and avant-garde artworks in the mid-1960s, a term that represents the practices and works with innovative and interdisciplinary tendency. Along with the constantly evolving and globalized innovations of science and technology, the understanding and application of intermediality in art practices are increasingly integrated with the dynamics of science, technology and culture.
The phenomenon of integration between art. science and technology occured almost simultaneously in different parts of the world and generated a very significant influence, not only in the world of art, but also in the context of world culture. Based on this phenomenon, intermedia art is one of the disciplines that are the outcome from reintegration between art, science and technology, after the disintegration between art and other disciplines in the 19th century. Intermedia art can be understood and studied as one of the bridges between art, science and technology.
In this occasion, intermedia art will be examined through its practice in the educational institution of visual art of which has intermedia art discourse as one of its majors. This research uses a comparative-qualitative methodology in a comparative study on intermediate art education for bachelor degree in Bandung Institute of Technology and Tokyo University of the Arts. Both institutions have been recognized in their respective countries and internationally, but the main linkage is the fact that Tokyo University of The Arts was the first institution in Asia to establish the Intermedia Art Department in 1999, while the Bandung Institute of Technology was the first institution in Southeast Asia to establish Art Intermedia as one of its majors in 2007.
Beyond their similarities as the visionaries in their respective countries - the history, development and potential of intermedia art in both institutions are at different levels and accelerations. This distinction is found, understood and compared through literature review, direct observation and interviews. The search for proof of integrations between science, technology and culture will be linked to a comprehensive review of the case studies on curriculum and teaching method’s significance in the intermedia art final project.
This research is expected to be a reference for the evaluation and the development of intermedia art in Bandung Institute of Technology as part of Indonesian technoculture, through a comparative study with intermedia art in Tokyo University of the Arts as a part of the technoculture of Japan. |
