Gold processing technique, that can be categorized as a small scale mining, has been contaminating the environment along the river area, due to the existence of mercury (Hg) element in the water and soil body on the bottom part of the river. After that, the correlation between concentration of the contaminant and the mill existence, to observe the contribution of mill amalgamation as a heavy metal contamination sources, was performed.

From the laboratory test, it was shown that the concentration of mercury in the sample of water was approximately around 0 ppb – 16.98 ppb and in the sample of soil, the concentration showed values around 8 ppm to 146.02 ppm. This results were used to estimate the output of mercury level contributed by mill located along the river, by using them as input data. From the modelling results, it was shown that the concentrations of mercury contributed by the mills were approximately around 0.36 ppb to 5675.76 ppb. This results were then used to predict the mercury concentration level in the sediment. Furthermore, the results predicted by the model were then compared to the mercury concentration laboratory data for the same location (distance). It was shown that the difference between them were quite close i.e. around 0,0000000044 ppm – 2.04 ppm. text |
