EFEK EKSTRAK TEMU GIRING (CURCUMA HEYNEANA VAL & V.ZIJP ) TERHADAP KADAR KALESTROL DARAH TIKUS JANTAN

The effect of an aqueous extract of Curcuma heyneana Val & v.Zijp rhizomes (temu giring) on the total plasma cholesterol content of hypercholesterolaemic diet administered male rats (Wistar strain) was investigated. The incre ased total plasma cholesterol level of rats induced exogenously and endogenously by cholesterol diet associated with propyl thio uracil was progressively lowered. The simultaneous oral administration of temu giring extract ( 2 g/kg.b.w.) to hypercholesterolaemic rats produced a significant lowering of cholesterol levels on the 14 th.days ( P<0,02 ). Its potency was comparable to that produced by Soya lechitin at the same dose and by the same method. In this case however, the effect of Soya lechitin was more pronounced ( P<0,01 ). On hypercholesterolaemic rats induced endogenously bypropyl thio uracil alone, temu giring extract as well as Soya lechitin orally administered at the dose of 1 g/kg b.w. for 10 days respectively, showed no significant decrease in total plasma cholesterol. The results suggest that temu giring extract has the ability to decrease the total plasma cholesterol level of rats fed on cholesterol diet, by inhibiting the absorption of exogenous cholesterol.
