Summary: | Indonesia is a tropical country that owns numerous flora with high diversity such as oilproducing crop, for instance, Sterculia foetida (Kepoh) plant which is able to grow in poor land condition. Kepoh oil is non edible oil and produced from kepoh seed. Kepoh oil has distinctive characteristic due to its cyclopropenoid functional group in its main fatty acid component. If there is rearrangement of the functional group, it will lead to branched fatty acid forming. The fatty acid might be considered as fuel with low melting point and high oxidation stability which is produced by hydrogenation. The goal of this research is determining proper procedure to break cyclopropene functional group and double bond fatty acid methyl ester (FAME) of kepoh oil. This research will be conducted stage by stage that consists of: material preparation, main experiment, and analysis. Material preparation involves oil Kepoh extraction, FAME production, and catalyst production. Main experiment includes FAME of Kepoh oil transfer hydrogenation with formic acid as donor hydrogen. Parameter analyzed in this research are iodine value and cyclopropenoid functional group content with Besson test. <br />

The proper procedure for break cyclopropenoid functional group and break double bond with two stage of processes. The first stage is stirred FAME of kepoh oil with solution Cu2+ in formic acid. Then, separate FAME of kepoh oil from solution Cu2+ in formic acid by adding acetone in separating funnel. The second stage is hydrogenation of FAME of kepoh oil with Ni-Ag / Siral 40 catalyst, and assisted by nickel acetyl acetonate and solution Ni2+ in formic acid. The solvent is acetone and tryethilamine is added to make base condition. |
