EFFECTS OF Bi EXCESS ON THE PURITY OF BISMUTH FERRITE SYNTHESIZED BY SOLID STATE REACTION METHOD

Bismuth ferrite is an oxide material with possessing ABO perovskite structure where A-cation gives contribution to ferroeletric properties while B-cation contributes to the ferromagnetic properties. This unique structure causes single phase bismuth ferrite to be multiferroic in room temperature. Bis...

Bismuth ferrite is potentially applicable in storage technology such as sensor and spintronic device of which the electrical and magnetic polarization can be coupled to make manipulative device. In this research, bismuth ferrite is synthesized using solid state reaction method. Bi excess given to the samples significantly affects the purity of synthesized bismuth ferrite. XRD characterization results show sample with 3% Bi excess produce good XRD pattern followed with the presence of secondary phase of Bi25FeO40 at 280 dan 320 diffraction angles. Sintering process at a longer time produces sample with higher impurity phases. SEM characterization results show morphology structure of bismuth ferrite with Bi excess to have particles similar in shape with its precursors compared to the samples without Bi excess. Raman spectra of the samples show the contribution of 13 phonons matched to the theoritical data, which are mode A1 and E. text
