Summary: | Fungi is one of the microorganism which is responsible for causing skin infection especially in tropical countries like Indonesia. In other hand, traditional medicine usage has progressed widely in our society, and clove oil is being one of the traditional medicine that commonly used nowadays. Indonesia is one of the main producer of clove oil in the world. Clove oil is one of volatile oil which is derived from the leaf of clove (Syzigium aromaticum (L.)) and has eugenol as primary content which has antifungal activity. This research aimed to determine kinds of fungi which had sensitivity towards clove oil. The clove oil was characterized by determining its organoleptic properties such as color, odor and taste; determining the solubility in ethanol; density and determining the refraction index. Sensitivity of three kinds of fungi which are Candida albicans, Microsporum gypseum, dan Trichophyton mentagrophytes toward clove oil was determined by using agar diffusion method with paper disk on SDA as the media and liquid microdilution with SDB as the media. The substances which were used in this research mentioned as following: clove oil 0,5% and 1% diluted in DMSO 50%; DMSO 50% as negative control; and fluconazole 4, 8, 16, 32, and 64 μg/ml as positive control. Antifungal activity was characterized by inhibition zone around the paper disc and the results showed that the largest inhibition zone was occured in media contained with Trichophyton mentagrophytes. Minimum Inhibitory Consentration (MIC) and Minimum Fungicidal Concentration (MFC) are only clearly visible in Trichophyton mentagrophytes which are 0,125% and 0,25% respectively. In summary, clove oil showed better activity in Trichophyton mentagrophytes than Candida albicans and Microsporum gypseum. So, the most sensitive fungi towards clove oil is Trichophyton mentagrophytes. |
