The increasing usage of plastic will be followed by a growing number of plastic waste, one of it is EPS (Expanded Polystyrene) waste. On the other hand, the demand of asphalt (bitumen) for the highway manufacture in Indonesia is still rely on oil bitumen that is getting more expensive. To increase the asphalt performance, addition of polymers such as plastics for modifying bitumen into asphalt polymer become more popular. In this reseach EPS plastic waste is utilized as a substitution material for asphalt in Asphalt Concrete Wearing Course (AC-WC) layer with 3 substitution variation, 10%, 20% and 40%. EPS plastix waste is mixed with asphalt using wet method by mixing EPS plastic waste with liquid asphalt and heated until become homogeneous mixture. The addition of EPS plastic waste will affect the properties of the asphalt in terms of penetration, softening point, flash point, specific gravity and viscosity. OBC (Optimum Bitumen Content) value of AC-WC test specimen with 60/70 pen bitumen was 6%, asphalt substitution EPS plastic waste 10% was 7.2%, asphalt substitution EPS plastic waste 20% was 7.9% and asphalt substitution EPS plastic waste 40% was 9.6%. OBC high value does not mean the asphalt mass used is also high because most asphalt has been substituted by EPS plastic waste. The asphalt mass used in mixture with 40% substitution is less than 60/70 pen asphalt mixtures but give a higher stability. Aside from the technical advantage, the utilization of EPS plastic waste is also favorable in terms of environmental and economic aspect. EPS plastic waste utilization will not giving harmful effect into air pollution and also can reduce the amount of plastic waste generated in landfill. Also in terms of the economy, utilization of EPS plastic waste can reduce asphalt costs text |
