Floods are one of destructive natural hazards. Flood is an overflow of water that submerges land which is usually dry. Floods can occur in rivers when the flow rate exceeds the capacity of the river channel. Floods often cause damage to homes and facilities if they are in the natural flood plains of rivers. For watershed that naturally has widening section, this wide part may function as a natural dam and protect city of a river from flooding. However, for watersheds without a natural dam, the construction of a storage basin at upstream area is a good way to prevent floods. In flood situation, which is an extreme case, momentum equation reduces to simple equilibrium between bottom friction and gravity. In this case, mass conservation reduces to a kinematic wave equation. In this article, we use this equation to study the role of natural dam, as well as storage basin (usually man-made structure) as flood protection. We will use numerical method to simulate how the upstream flood will reduce when it passes through a dam or storage basin. In addition, we can simulate the role of flood gate for further protection.
